Norwegian Aquaculture Industry

Healthy salmon on the world’s tables

Atlantic salmon

Aquaculture is a cornerstone of Norway’s export economy. Our goal is to drive value creation through healthy, functional feed that gives salmon better health and welfare, higher survival and stronger growth.

Our contribution

Health-promoting feed, where the effect is greatest

We develop feed from the very start through the early sea phase, for long-term survival and animal welfare.

Eggs Fry Smolt Early sea Grow-out
  • Potent raw materials from plants, algae and alternative protein sources grown on land
  • Essential amino acids preserved through a new, gentle production method
  • Access to patented machines
  • Together, this makes the concept hard to copy
Smolt from the NMBU trials

Trials completed with good results

Effect documented by NMBU

All feeds in the trial had the same base composition, formulated to industry standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Trials in triplicate
  • Freshwater phase and onward at sea
NMBU – Norwegian University of Life Sciences

Compared with the control feed

Less fat on the heart

Virtually free of fat on the heart and internal organs. A significant improvement on a known health problem in the industry.

Firmer faeces

More stable faeces that do not break up in the water. Better water quality in both RAS and FTS.

Lower cortisol

Measured after sea transfer. Lower levels of stress hormone, a sign of better health and welfare.

Higher gutted weight

Suggests energy goes to growth rather than fat storage around the heart and internal organs.

Welfare indicators in the trial

  • No eye haemorrhages
  • No cataracts
  • No deformities
  • No skin wounds or haemorrhages
  • No shortened opercula
  • No runts (no fish died during the trial)

Sustainability

Reduced harvesting of marine resources

Growing plants, algae and other new raw materials on land protects the food base of vulnerable marine ecosystems.

Planned production of feed and ingredients in Norway: “Made in arctic Norway”.

Value to the industry

Better health, better margins

Better fish health benefits the fish, the farmer and the industry.

Robust smolt

Healthy, strong smolt gives better robustness and survival later in the growth phase.

More fish, higher margins

Lower mortality in all phases gives more fish to harvest and fewer losses. If the feed is used throughout the growth phase, we also expect better gutted weight.

Better animal welfare

Better health means less stress and better overall welfare for the fish.

Stronger reputation

The industry is under pressure, and measures that improve fish health, robustness and survival are urgently needed.

Next step

We welcome dialogue with fish farmers, suppliers, developers of alternative protein sources, research communities in nutrition and animal welfare, and long-term investors with a “green” approach.

We are now moving towards our own production of functional feed based on new raw materials and gentle methods.
